Abstract

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are common worldwide, occurring in about 40% of the population, more commonly in women than men, and decreasing with age. Today, the influence of stress on the clinical course of inflam- matory bowel diseases and FGIDs, which include functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome, are being actively studied. The purpose of the work was to collect, analyze, search, and generalize data from the literature regarding the development of the FGIDs and the functional state of en- terocytes under experimental conditions of stress in rodents. In this review, we focus on the current state of knowledge and future directions in research as it pertains to FGIDs and the functional state of enterocytes in conditions of early-life stress (maternal separation model, restriction of the amount of nesting material, neonatal odor-shock conditioning), stress in emerging adulthood (models of social stress and models of physical stress) and combined stress in rodents. Animal models can help elucidate the mechanisms through which early-life stress, stress in emerging adulthood, and combined stress have pathophysiological effects on the development of FGIDs and the functional state of enterocytes.

Keywords: functional gastrointestinal disorders; enterocytes; early-life stress; stress in emerging adulthood; combined stress; regulated cell death.
