Abstract

We showed here that energy metabolism in thoracic rabbit aorta and posterior vena cava is disturbed two weeks following the induction of alloxan-induced diabetes and monoiod-acetate intoxication. In the vessels studied, the alterations are manifested in the decrease in the intensity of glucose uptake, oxygen consumption, lactic acid production, and ATP resynthesis. Simultaneously, the ATP content is significantly reduced. The possible significance of these disorders in the development of Monckeberg’s arteriosclerosis is discussed.

Keywords: arteries, veins, alloxan diabetes, monoiodacetate,Monckeberg’s arteriosclerosis.
